A leading organization focused on promoting transparency and accountability in governance BudgIT, has forged a strategic partnership with the Aziza Development Foundation under BudgIT’ Governance for Women by Women project to champion women’s inclusivity in governance and politics.

The collaborative effort aims to empower women in Laniba, Balogun, and Sode communities of Akinyẹle local government in Ibadan by raising awareness about their vital role in political decision-making processes entwined with business and financial literacy session.

At the forefront of this partnership was the South-West Regional coordinator and Oyo state officer for BudgIT Mr. Ademuyiwa Adeyemi, and Funmi Okubanjo, who is the Executive Director of the Aziza Development Foundation.

Together, they orchestrated a community sensitization event hosted at Laniba Grammar School on March 23, 2024, drawing attention to the imperative of women’s participation in governance structures.

This initiative marks the second installment of BudgIT’s community sensitization efforts targeting women, following a successful collaboration with the Women’s Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria.

During the event, Mr. Adéyemí enlightened attendees on practical strategies for holding government officials and political office holders accountable. By equipping women with knowledge and tools to engage effectively in civic processes, the partnership endeavors to amplify their voices and influence within the political landscape.

On her own part, Mrs. Okubanjo emphasized the need to arm female nano and micro-entrepreneurs with essential knowledge and skills vital for navigating the intricate terrain of business ownership and availing them easy access to soft loan.

Local residents of Laniba, Balogun, and Sode communities enthusiastically participated in discussions centered on fostering an inclusive political environment that reflects the diverse needs and aspirations of women. The event served as a platform for sharing experiences, concerns, and aspirations, fostering a sense of solidarity among attendees.

Acknowledging the pivotal role of grassroots engagement in effecting meaningful change, both organisations reiterated their commitment to sustained collaboration in advancing women’s rights and representation in governance.

One of the participants at the event, Mrs Adesola Adejuyigbe lamented that the only school serving several neighbouring communities is in a deplorable state.

When speaking after the engagement, the Baale of Laniba Chief Olukunmi Laniba commended the initiative, recognizing its potential to spark transformative shifts in societal attitudes towards gender equality and political participation, and pledged his support for ongoing efforts to empower women and promote inclusivity in decision-making processes.

In addition to raising awareness, the partnership between BudgIT and the Aziza Development Foundation seeks to facilitate capacity-building programs tailored to the specific needs of women in Laniba, Balogun, and Sode communities, with the full realisation of the fact that these programs will equip women with the skills and knowledge necessary to actively engage in governance and advocate for their rights.

As part of its broader mission to promote transparency and accountability, Mr Adeyemi maintained that BudgIT will continue to collaborate with grassroots organizations and community leaders to amplify marginalized voices and drive systemic change.

He noted that going forward, BudgIT and the Aziza Development Foundation are poised to expand their partnership and outreach efforts, with a steadfast commitment to advancing women’s rights and promoting inclusive governance practices at all levels of society.

The event concluded with a call to action, urging women to leverage their collective strength and newfound knowledge to demand equal representation and meaningful participation in political processes, as participants departed with a renewed sense of purpose and determination to effect positive change in their communities.
