Spokesperson of the Delta State Police Command, DSP Bright Edafe, has advised domestic violence victims to walk away as marriage is not by force.
The PPRO stated this on Friday, November 10, when human rights activist, Harrison Gwamnishu, raised alarm about a pregnant woman being abused by her husband in Warri.
“I received this message and I wish you help intervene as it’s happening in Warri, Delta State. Good morning Sir, I’m 7 months pregnant and I have been suffering all kinds of abuse by my husband, beats me, locks me out of the house most times, forcefully,” Harrison wrote.
The PPRO replied, writing; “Direct her to the nearest Police station and also advise her that marriage is not by force. She can get out while she is still alive,”
Earlier, Edafe also reacted to the case of a domestic violence victim who went back to her husband after Harrison’s intervention.
“Pls guys, make me understand You raised an alarm on social media over domestic violence, and the Police swung into action and arrested the husband. Now she is saying the husband should be left alone, he’s her husband and she loves him. Please guys make me understand. IS MARRIAGE BY FORCE? IS IT A MUST THAT EVERYBODY MUST BE MARRIED? IS IT SO DIFFICULT TO WALK AWAY?” he wrote.
