Tension erupted on Monday, Dec. 4, at the Yelwa Campus of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, ATBU, in Bauchi, as students, protesting the killing of their colleague, were teargassed by police officers.
Recall that a 500-level Geology student was killed by an armed robber on Saturday night, Dec. 2.
The victim, Joseph Agabaidu, was said to be returning to his lodge situated around the Yelwan Tudu Market in the Yelwa area, a suburb of the Bauchi metropolis, at about 7:00 pm, when he was attacked. He died on Sunday morning, Dec. 3, from the injuries sustained during the attack.
Students of ATBU scheduled Monday, Dec. 4, to embark on a peaceful protest with regard to Joseph’s death.
However, their protest was interrupted by police officers who stationed their armoured tankers opposite the school gate.
A video from the scene shows students, who had closed the school gate, singing solidarity songs. However, they took to their heels when shots rang in the air.
Other photos from the scene show them running as smoke, said to be from a tear gas canister, surrounded them.
