The Super Falcons of Nigeria have become the first African side to advance to the knockout phase at the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand following a 0-0 Group B draw against the Republic of Ireland on Monday, July 31.

Before the game, Nigeria led Group B with four points and a goal difference ahead of Canada who also have the same number of points. Australia was third with three points. But Australia topped Group B with six points after thrashing Canada 4-0 to guarantee a place in the last 16.

The Super Falcons had better chances in the game but could not convert any of their chances. They will now face the top team in Group D, which at this stage looks likely to be European champions England.
